Meaningful Use
| Meaningful Use |
Amid the uproar and confusion surrounding the issues related to the adoption of Health Information Technology and associated stimulus money, we want to take a a moment to highlight the issues that will have an impact on you and your practice - now and in the future.1. Health Information Technology stimulus packages are currently available through the federal governement.
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 includes an estimated $20 billion in physician incentive payments to Medicare and Medicaid providers. It requires physicians to be "meaningful users" of Electronic Health Records (EHR) beginning in 2011, but details are FAR from complete. Government agencies are still developing the program and details will not be finalized until the second quarter of 2010.
2. "Meaningful Use" has been determined
Interim guidelines have already been published, but the final "Meaningful Use" rules that will define this issue will be released over the next few weeks. Early indications are that the following components will be required: Electronic Patient Health Records with demographic data, clinical decision support capabilities at the point of care, e-Prescribing, comprehensive reporting tools, the ability to electronically exchange clinical information among healthcare professionals and agencies, and compliance with HIPPA guidelines.
3. Your practice WILL need to invest in an EMR System to participate in the my1HIE® Health Information Exchange
You can start using technology now without purchasing a traditional EMR system. Providers can use My WorkspaceSM, a secure, web-based portal that delivers unlimited connectivity to a community of healthcare users and clinical applications without disrupting your office flow. 4.
